Choked - Paisa bolta hai

Choked - Paisa bolta hai.

This dropped on Netflix today and is a one time watch for sure.

This Anurag Kashyap creation when compared to his previous work is just fluff. But seen singularly it is a good watch.

I liked the story, which is simple and effective. It follows it's tagline "Paisa bolta hai" quite faithfully. There is Amruta Subhash who is a fine actress and is always enjoyable to watch.

She has a simple and defined storyline, and is an opportunist. Roshan Matthew is a good foil for Saiyami Kher, who shows acting chops I didn't know she had. Anurag Kashyap uses some very unflattering camera angles for her, which strangely contribute to her emotive capability.
She is a bank teller who finds a secret stash of cash and has to then use it wisely.
The impediments that come her way, compounded by the vagrancy of her husband are fun to watch.
The angsty Kashyap uses the backdrop of Demonetization to add punch to the story. He is also unable to refrain from inserting smart jabs at the political scenario.
But overall the dialogue is smart and completely expletive free which made me wonder once or twice if I was indeed watching a Kashyap film. 😂😂😎

The background music is very ill used and out of sync many a times. A couple of times I felt that there would now be horses galloping through the streets of Mumbai.

Let me know what you thought of it.

Movies being released on OTT platforms on a Friday somehow seems reassuring, so see you on the other side of the big release next Friday - Gulabo Sitabon.(Prime Video)

P.S- I will have my popcorn and bottled water ready for that.

P.P.S- If you know how to make caramel popcorn or know from where I can get some, please do let me know.

Love and Peace.

Monica, O My Darling

Straight off the bat, let me tell you that I went into this movie cold. I just saw the trailer and put it on my watch list. I was totally enamored with the cast and the premise. I knew I was going to watch this one, so I didn't delve into the promotional shenanigans.  So if you are of the same bent of mind, stop reading and start watching.  And on your behalf, I did Google Ankola, it is a town in Karnataka and is not to be confused with Akola in Maharashtra. Ha ! Ha! Netflix has been delighting us with gems like Raat Akeli thi, Haseen dilruba and Bulbul. Add this one to that list and think Gehraiyaan. I need not stress on the proficient star cast. They are masters of their craft. Starting with the sneaky Rajkummar Rao, the sultry Huma Quereshi and the wily Radhika Apte, the ensemble includes the creepy Sukant Goel, the beleaguered Zayn Marie and many others. For me Sikandar Kher was a standout. A shoutout to his intensity and his baritone.  The dialogues are spot on and t...

Razorblade Tears by S A Cosby

This book belongs to the revenge trope and I enjoyed reading it for a reason, other than just the story or the thrills, it was for the delicious turn of phrase, that the author employed. Here are some examples: “It didn’t seem fair for a man to mourn someone so deeply, whom he had loved so miserly!” “Wound on his cheek was weeping like a broken-hearted bride.” “As careful as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.” “Give a man a clipboard and watch his true nature come out.” “He smiled; it was like watching an icicle form.” The story is about two men who are bound by destiny, when their sons who were married, are murdered. The tapestry is enriched by the fact that one family is black and the other is white. Throw in the fact that both the fathers are ex-cons and you have an intrigue on hand. Other than the language I liked the way the conversations were handled and how the characters were revealed by thought, word and deed, rather than extrapo...

Gehraaiyan

Gehraiyaan This is one of the first hindi movies I have enjoyed in a long while, and that is because it is pure entertainment. I watched it and I liked it and I didn't try and explore its morality or the why's and wherefores. It might never become a cult classic like others in its genre, namely Silsila, Masoom, Arth or even Pati patni aur woh, but it is a decent watch. Fidelity is a state of the mind and even a golden oldie like Navrang addressed it as such. Putting that aside, this movie belongs to Deepika Padukone all the way. But, ah the dashing and devious devil, Siddhant Chaturvedi makes a mark too. Deepika/Alisha is a conflicted individual, whose backstory is relayed to us in bits and pieces. The irony is that, her perception of everything is colored by her version of the truth. Watch how she takes pictures and then crops them. That's a peak in to her state of mind. She tries to err on the safe side always, and it reflects in her choice of life partner even. Her cou...
