Straight off the bat, let me tell you that I went into this movie cold. I just saw the trailer and put it on my watch list.
I was totally enamored with the cast and the premise. I knew I was going to watch this one, so I didn't delve into the promotional shenanigans.
So if you are of the same bent of mind, stop reading and start watching.
And on your behalf, I did Google Ankola, it is a town in Karnataka and is not to be confused with Akola in Maharashtra.
Ha ! Ha!
Netflix has been delighting us with gems like Raat Akeli thi, Haseen dilruba and Bulbul. Add this one to that list and think Gehraiyaan.
I need not stress on the proficient star cast. They are masters of their craft. Starting with the sneaky Rajkummar Rao, the sultry Huma Quereshi and the wily Radhika Apte, the ensemble includes the creepy Sukant Goel, the beleaguered Zayn Marie and many others. For me Sikandar Kher was a standout. A shoutout to his intensity and his baritone.
The dialogues are spot on and the music by Achint Thakkar and lyrics by Varun Grover match the tone of the movie.
The cinematography hits you with teeny surprises when you least expect it. There are bit shots of half faces and fingers which were so apt. Speaking of apt, nothing more than apt, than Apte asking to be taken seriously!Too funny! (Just too many apts here!)
Watch out for the references to the golden oldies and to movies by Sriram Raghavan and Anurag Kashyap. The story is racy and does drag a bit, but picks up again. Vasan Bala is a worthy entrant to this niche club of creators, who do thrills so well.
Why are you still reading this? Have I not convinced you enough?
Throw that bag of popcorn 🍿 into the microwave and grab some sodas, and #NetflixandChill.
P.S- I hope you had a fruitful and tough week, coz then, this right here is your reward.
P.P.S - It has been shot in my favorite city!
P.P.P.S - I hope you like the original song as much as I do, because 2 hours of hearing it play in the background is the best pick-up ever. The background score is a character in itself, and is amongst the best I have heard in a while. Farsh pe khade khali khote sikke ye, has promptly entered so many of my playlists. (It will make you nostalgic about the duo of Gulzar and Jagjit Singh, sighhhh! )
