Mardaani - The Film
Well there are heroines and then there is Rani Mukherjee! Pity that she has been choosing so unwisely in the past 6-7 years! The depth and drama that she can bring to her roles is God-given. I am a 100% sure that you can't learn or cultivate what Rani has, she is so good in this movie that I was left wondering what a treat it would have been to see her in Ek thi Daayan or Luck By Chance.
After all the high testosterone that was in the movie theaters these past few weeks, it was such a relief to see a movie with a halfway decent story-line that doesn't presume the viewers to be Idjits!
The story follows a lady cop who takes on a crime syndicate head honcho and comes out trumps! Rani has been extremely reserved in eking out this character, her gestures are measured and her expressions are realistic. The director Pradeep Sarkar in this movie re-awakens memory of his skills of ad making. So little is said and yet so much is conveyed. Rani has put in her heart into the role and it shows. The entire cast is well chosen and well defined. Small snippets of conversation reveal so much about each of them.
But wait, it is sacrilege if I say even a word more without mentioning the absolute USP of this movie. The anti-hero or should i say the anti-heroine.... Ooooohhhh!!! what a dish ladies. Absolutely to die for. He is an actor called Tahir Raj Bhasin and oh he is so effective, he makes your skin crawl. A villain that speaks flawless English, has no overly dramatic gestures, no fetishes and is absolutely drop dead gorgeous! This is a new kinda a villain i hope he is here to stay.
Thankfully the narrative doesn't get interrupted by needless songs and unwanted romantic arcs. the emotion is nestled quite effectively in between the action. there is a scene in which Rani and her husband console each other. It is such a beautiful scene with just a line said. Beautiful!
All in all it is a movie that is well packaged and has none of the usual YRF watermarks. Delhi has been shot superbly. But the climax could have been shorter. In fact a few scenes before the climax is the meatiest portion of the movie. All in all a job well done and I enjoyed watching the movie.
In an interview Rani Mukherjee mentioned that she would do a sequel if this movie did well, so here's hoping for a sequel!
