HAIDER

                                                                                   HAIDER
And that is how a story is told!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The legacy of the Bard is in safe hands with ‘Bard’waj…….
Well this is no news if you have seen Maqbool and Omkara. What a story teller the man is! I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen for even a moment. VB is indeed one of the few directors who can take actors of the stature of Tabu, KK Menon and Irfan Khan and do them complete justice. What performances he has elicited form them! Truly stupendous!  And who knew that Shahid could act like this?
The backdrop of the story is indeed Kashmir, but not the Kashmir of the romantic tales. It is a Kashmir that lies stark and bare and shows us how people there actually live.
The story couldn’t be simpler. It’s a classic tale of revenge. A young boy finds out that his father has been betrayed and he sets out to avenge him. The story is dominated by the utter selfishness of his mother Gazala- played by Tabu, who is stuck in a marriage she has grown to dislike. Consequently she uses every possible feminine wile known to her to get her own way with her son and husband.

Her selfishness is fully exploited by her cad of a brother-in-law (Khurram) , who is creepy to say the least. The disgust that these two characters arouse in you is a testimonial to their acting prowess.
Helping Haider in his quest for justice is his childhood sweetheart Arshiya played by Shradhha Kapoor. She is competent but leaves no mark. A person who does leave a mark is Narendra Jha, the actor playing Haider’s father- Hilal. I hope we get to see more of him. Anshuman Malhotra plays the young Haider and is a treat to watch.

Irfan Khan is surprisingly the style quotient in this one! J J He is so flamboyant that even in such a short role he is memorable! Why I wonder, does he find the need to do The Amazing Spiderman?

There are two Salman Khans in this movie and they provide the much needed comic relief. The scenes explaining “CHUTZPAH” are hilarious. The dialogues are beautifully crafted and the scenes between Haider and Gazala are superb. Also mentionable is a scene between Haider and Arshiya where he teaches her correct pronunciations!

Shahid Kapoor is exceptional both in his soliloquy and the song Bismil. I never ever thought he could act like this. But then he does have his father’s genes!
The music in the movie is beautiful. The grave digger’s song gives goose bumps. Bismil in both sound and visuals is par excellence. Vishal and Vishal together have given us a new rock anthem – Aao Na is mind blowing.

I am not giving out too many details because you absolutely have to see this one.
Also I am proud to live in a country like ours where movies like these can be made and exhibited without censorship!

Monica, O My Darling

Straight off the bat, let me tell you that I went into this movie cold. I just saw the trailer and put it on my watch list. I was totally enamored with the cast and the premise. I knew I was going to watch this one, so I didn't delve into the promotional shenanigans.  So if you are of the same bent of mind, stop reading and start watching.  And on your behalf, I did Google Ankola, it is a town in Karnataka and is not to be confused with Akola in Maharashtra. Ha ! Ha! Netflix has been delighting us with gems like Raat Akeli thi, Haseen dilruba and Bulbul. Add this one to that list and think Gehraiyaan. I need not stress on the proficient star cast. They are masters of their craft. Starting with the sneaky Rajkummar Rao, the sultry Huma Quereshi and the wily Radhika Apte, the ensemble includes the creepy Sukant Goel, the beleaguered Zayn Marie and many others. For me Sikandar Kher was a standout. A shoutout to his intensity and his baritone.  The dialogues are spot on and t...

Razorblade Tears by S A Cosby

This book belongs to the revenge trope and I enjoyed reading it for a reason, other than just the story or the thrills, it was for the delicious turn of phrase, that the author employed. Here are some examples: “It didn’t seem fair for a man to mourn someone so deeply, whom he had loved so miserly!” “Wound on his cheek was weeping like a broken-hearted bride.” “As careful as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.” “Give a man a clipboard and watch his true nature come out.” “He smiled; it was like watching an icicle form.” The story is about two men who are bound by destiny, when their sons who were married, are murdered. The tapestry is enriched by the fact that one family is black and the other is white. Throw in the fact that both the fathers are ex-cons and you have an intrigue on hand. Other than the language I liked the way the conversations were handled and how the characters were revealed by thought, word and deed, rather than extrapo...

Gehraaiyan

Gehraiyaan This is one of the first hindi movies I have enjoyed in a long while, and that is because it is pure entertainment. I watched it and I liked it and I didn't try and explore its morality or the why's and wherefores. It might never become a cult classic like others in its genre, namely Silsila, Masoom, Arth or even Pati patni aur woh, but it is a decent watch. Fidelity is a state of the mind and even a golden oldie like Navrang addressed it as such. Putting that aside, this movie belongs to Deepika Padukone all the way. But, ah the dashing and devious devil, Siddhant Chaturvedi makes a mark too. Deepika/Alisha is a conflicted individual, whose backstory is relayed to us in bits and pieces. The irony is that, her perception of everything is colored by her version of the truth. Watch how she takes pictures and then crops them. That's a peak in to her state of mind. She tries to err on the safe side always, and it reflects in her choice of life partner even. Her cou...
