P.K
Although I saw this one on the first day itself, I deliberately didn't write anything in detail as saying anything would have just given away a lot of stuff and now that enough of you have seen this by now, I am less worried about giving away the so-called "Suspense" :-)  So an alien lands on earth and is soon separated from his device which shall be able to get him back to his planet.
In an effort to get back his gadget, he applies for help from the highest authority on our planet- God!
What follows is a delightful series of misadventures which leads us to examine how we perceive our religion. A parallel story track is that of a journalist who has been disappointed in love and is picking up the threads of her life. On hearing the alien’s story she takes it upon herself to help him get back home.
Such a simple straight forward story! But how beautifully executed…… Thinking back to Hirani’s first ever venture- Munnabhai and seeing this one now tells how Hirani stays true to the basic premise of storytelling. Tell an often told story with a twist and tell it well and tell it clean! Often directors, who start with great stories and small budgets, go astray when landed with big budgets. But Hirani is a man who knows the craft of storytelling well! And he is blessed with the indulgence of an actor who although not THE best is certainly one of the most sincere and heartfelt. It helps that Aamir Khan can do a passably good job and is very easy on the eyes. That guy has to have discovered an anti-aging serum; there is no other way that he could possibly look the same as he did 25 years back. What’s your secret buddy? Bottle it and sell it; we are all waiting!
So many of you felt that the storyline was similar to that of Oh My God, and hence this was a passable movie. Let me ask you then, if each time that you go to the theatres do you actually hope to see a new story? Imagine how sad the world would be without endless remakes of Superman, Spiderman and Ironman. I am unwilling to accept that stories should be made only once and then never again. And it was the great storyteller himself – the bard, Shakespeare who said that there are only 7 original stories in the world.  So, for me this one was no deal breaker. And whilst you guys were looking for a brand new story I was enjoying the amazing cinematography and the music. “Bhagwan” sung by Sonu Nigam is perfect. Sonu Nigam dude you need to get over whatever prejudice you are harbouring against the music industry and sing more numbers. We miss you.
As for people who realised 10 days later that the movie has objectionable content……..   Well, neither my God, nor my religion, nor my beliefs are so puny that they shall get belittled by the opinion of a film-maker. Go check your conviction…..
If you haven’t already then please do see this one! Or hope that there is a sequel where Anushka goes visiting Aamir on his home planet! J J and think how that one would work out, coz it would be a planet full of naked people! That sequel shall require an entire factory working non-stop to produce all the transistors that would be needed. J J

Anvita Dutt, is a master story teller. And she, tells this one well too. She and Kanika Dillon have a knack of painting their leading ladies in shades of grey. Whilst Kanika brings in the whacky and the wild, Anvita brings in the angst. It makes for great entertainment.  This movie seeps in slowly and is for those of you who like the slow burn. There is drama and angst and tragedy and it leaves you wondering, what did I just watch? Was this a movie or sheer art? And it is a movie that stays with you for a bit.  The visuals are stunning, particularly those of the boat on the water. The noir-ish feel of the movie fits the mood perfectly. One does know what has happened and why, but the visuals and the artistry keep you in thrall. This is the story of a woman, who learns to be competitive in her mother's womb itself. Her quest for survival began in the womb itself. She then spends all her childhood and teen years having only her mother and constantly craving her validation. Is ...

Monica, O My Darling

Straight off the bat, let me tell you that I went into this movie cold. I just saw the trailer and put it on my watch list. I was totally enamored with the cast and the premise. I knew I was going to watch this one, so I didn't delve into the promotional shenanigans.  So if you are of the same bent of mind, stop reading and start watching.  And on your behalf, I did Google Ankola, it is a town in Karnataka and is not to be confused with Akola in Maharashtra. Ha ! Ha! Netflix has been delighting us with gems like Raat Akeli thi, Haseen dilruba and Bulbul. Add this one to that list and think Gehraiyaan. I need not stress on the proficient star cast. They are masters of their craft. Starting with the sneaky Rajkummar Rao, the sultry Huma Quereshi and the wily Radhika Apte, the ensemble includes the creepy Sukant Goel, the beleaguered Zayn Marie and many others. For me Sikandar Kher was a standout. A shoutout to his intensity and his baritone.  The dialogues are spot on and t...

Suicides

I am sorry, I am going to come across as terribly insensitive when I have said this but, what is all this fuss about? A celebrity was unable to cope with the pressures of the life he had chosen and gave up on living. I mean have you ever seen a rejected sportsperson commit suicide? And the person in question here actually had a degree from a very prestigious institute and could have looked for another job, but he didn't.  So my take on this is: 1- Nepotism is a fact in all walks of life. 2- A person who is suffering from Clinical Depression is a person who needs to be constantly monitored and a care-taker needs to be assigned, because patients of such depression always experiment with dosages and such. They also cease to take their medications. 3- Here it seems to have been the sister who was the designated care-taker, so why isn't she being questioned? 4- Also the doctor who was treating him said that SSR had discontinued his treatment. The correct protocol is to m...
