This is a movie which is sure to inspire a cult following. Much like the other one from Zoya Akhtar, Luck by Chance. I never did understand why that one didn't work. My fervent hope for this one is that the ayes be many and the nays be negligible.
The script is ridiculously simple, when I look back it's still more ridiculous that it gave such a high. But ah! The screenplay is utterly gorgeous. It's mind-blowing how one sits through 153 minutes without a thought for the time.
The cinematography is superlative as well. Mumbai has been shot beautifully. Never have I revelled in the beauty of that city as I did today. Also the faces are craggy and the surroundings are glitzy. The contrast works so well.
The Dharavi scenes are synthetic and sanitized, but nonetheless work wonders. Enough of the cinematic excellence that this movie is. Coming to the actors. What do I say about Ranveer that hasnt already been said. In fact I recently came across a tweet by Ritesh Deshmukh showing a photo of Ranveer in normal clothes, captioned - Ranveer in fancy dress. That sums it up folks. He is sheer talent and a chameleon to boot. He plays a 23 year old so convincingly that you never for a moment doubt his veracity. It was the intense vulnerability of his eyes which shook me. The scene where he records for the first time is a masterpiece and it is no wonder that this movie got a standing ovation at the Berlin Film festival. In fact my last outing to the theatres was his insane Simbaa. A chameleon indeed!
Aalia is stupendous. She carries her mad persona as if born to it. And you know that when she is on screen, fur is going to fly and mayhem will ensue. I noticed in the end credits that she had an action director all to herself. That made me a giggle because she certainly utilised him. One of favorite scenes in the movie where she instills mad fear in her supposed suitor. It was mad fun.
Moeen played by Vijay Varma is in full flow, as is Vijay Raaz. The mother daughter duo of Amruta Subhash and Jyoti Subhash are very watchable.
Not to be forgotten for a moment is Kalki. Her role is super short but played to perfection. Also tell me if you happened to catch the voice of the Delish Mr. Rahul Bose.
The end credits are a crescendo of triumph that will resound for long and are not to be missed at all.
Whew! I still feel a buzz from the movie and it isn't any wonder that I went to the wrong floor in the parking lot to look for my car, then panicked but realised in time my mistake, before I actually made a scene. :-)
Anyways you tell me why are you still reading this? You should be already on your way out to catch the last show or at the very least you should be booking your seats for tomorrow.
Let me know if you agreed with my ramblings.
Happy Valentine's Day.
